Not just any face on the screen, but someone you share at least one thing with: a hobby, a series you are watching, a language you are learning. A conversation that starts from a common point goes further than one that starts from a bare "hi".
Roulettly handles that with interests. On the first screen, under "What you are into", you add a few words about what you like. They are optional, and they help place you in front of someone who shares your tastes. The rest of the setup is short: your camera, who you are, who you want to talk to, the 18+ box, and Start.

How interests work on Roulettly
Three things worth knowing before your first call.
Add a few, not a list
Two to four interests are enough: music, football, anime, cooking, a language you are practising. Short words find a match more often than long sentences.
They guide the matching, they never block it
Matching tries to put you opposite someone with similar interests. If nobody shares them at that moment, you are still connected to someone, so you are never stuck waiting for a perfect match.
Change them whenever you like
There is no profile to edit. You change your interests on the first screen before your next call, and follow your mood from one evening to the next.
Moderation you can use on every call
Two buttons stay within reach during each call: Report and Block. Report lets you tell our moderation team what happened by choosing a reason, such as harassment or hate, spam, violence or someone who looks like a minor. The team reviews every report, and accounts reported by several people get suspended.
Block takes the person out of your matches for as long as you decide: 1 hour, 1 day, 2 days, 7 days or forever. During that time you are never matched with them again.
Roulettly is a random video chat reserved for adults aged 18 and over. Before you can start, you tick the box saying that you are 18 or older and that you accept the terms.
Every call goes through an encrypted relay
A signalling server introduces two strangers. After that, video and audio go from your device to our relay, then to the other person's device, for every match.
The stream stays end-to-end encrypted by WebRTC: the relay only forwards encrypted packets, and can neither read nor store them. The other person never receives your IP address, only the relay's. The conversation itself is not recorded.
What stays private
The basic chat asks for no account and no email address. The person opposite sees your video, hears your sound, and sees your nickname if you chose one, the gender you indicated and the flag of your country. Your interests help the matching; there is no profile page for anyone to browse.
The interface is available in 20 languages, and matching also gives priority to someone who speaks the same language as you, which makes a shared interest easier to talk about.
Choosing who you talk to
By default, "I want to talk to" is set to Everyone, and that is free. Premium, optional, lets you pick Women or Men instead, and adds Strict mode, which never widens the search: you leave Roulettly in the background and you are notified as soon as someone matches. Premium requires an e-mail account; the free chat does not.

Do I have to add interests?
No, they are optional. Without them you are matched with whoever is next; with them, matching tries to find someone who shares your tastes, and still connects you if nobody does.
What happens when I block someone?
You choose how long: 1 hour, 1 day, 2 days, 7 days or forever. During that time you are never matched with that person again.
What can I report?
Harassment or hate, spam or advertising, violence, someone who looks like a minor, a wrong gender declared, or anything else. Reports are reviewed by our moderation team.
Is Roulettly free?
Yes. Random video chat is free and needs no sign-up. Premium, optional, adds a filter to talk only to women or only to men.
Is my video recorded?
The conversation is not recorded. Video and audio go through our encrypted relay, which only forwards packets it cannot read and stores nothing. Moderation is the exception and covers only your own camera, as the privacy policy explains.
