Omegle is gone: where people go now

Omegle's founder announced its closure on 8 November 2023 (NPR). The wish to talk face to face with someone you have never met did not close with it. People still look for the same thing: a page where you allow your camera and, a second later, a stranger says hello. The story of the closure is told in what happened to Omegle.

Roulettly is built for exactly that. You open the page, allow your camera, and you are paired with a stranger by video and voice. No profile to fill in, no email to give, no password to invent. When a conversation is over, one tap on Next and you are talking to someone else, as many times as you like.

Three things carry the format, and they are the ones Roulettly protects. No barrier: between deciding to chat and seeing a face there is one step, the camera permission. Real randomness: nobody browses profiles or swipes, you meet whoever is waiting, and interests, if you add any, only help place you in front of someone who shares your tastes. The exit: the Next button is always there, so a conversation that does not click costs one tap.

What a random chat needs to last comes on top: an age limit of 18 and over, reporting and blocking on every match, a moderation team that reviews reports, and an encrypted relay that keeps your IP address away from the person in front of you.

Languages, devices and Premium

The interface comes in 20 languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Matching gives priority to someone who speaks the same language as you, without turning it into a wall: if nobody is available, you are not left waiting for a perfect match.

Roulettly runs in the browser, on a computer, a tablet or a phone, with nothing to download. If you prefer an app, the Android version is published on Google Play. Either way the only permission asked for is the camera, and the chat itself is free.

The start screen follows a fixed order. A preview of your own camera comes first, then You are (Woman or Man), then I want to talk to (Everyone, which is free), then What you are into for optional interests, the 18+ box, and the Start button. Nothing on it is mandatory except the box and the camera.

Premium is optional and needs an email account. It lets you talk only to women or only to men, with plans of 1, 6 or 12 months and no commitment. Strict mode is part of it: it never widens the search, so you can leave Roulettly in the background and be notified as soon as someone matches.

If your camera does not start, the cause is almost always on the device side: the browser permission was refused once, or another app is already using the camera. Allow it in the address bar or in your phone settings, close the other app and reload the page. Safety, moderation and privacy

Roulettly is a random video chat reserved for adults aged 18 and over, with Report and Block on every match. The rules are in the terms.

Reporting and blocking are on every match, and reports are reviewed by our moderation team.

The other person sees your video, your sound, your nickname if you chose one, the gender you indicated and the flag of your country. Not your email, and there is no profile to fill in.

A few habits keep a random chat pleasant: keep your full name, your address, your school or your workplace out of the conversation, and never move to another app because a stranger asks you to. A signalling server introduces two strangers, then every call passes through an encrypted relay. The relay forwards the stream without being able to read it, since the encryption is negotiated between the two devices, and the person in front of you only ever sees the relay's address, never yours.

The conversation is not recorded. Moderation is the only exception, and it only ever covers your own camera, never the person you are talking to. Images kept after a report or a detection, and moderation recordings, are deleted as soon as a decision is made, and automatically after 14 days at the latest; only the images of an account reported to the authorities are kept for 90 days.
